One of the most common lies the world tells about holiness is that it is restrictive, joyless, and dull. Many men quietly believe that obedience to God means settling for a life with less excitement, less fulfillment, and less satisfaction.
But Scripture teaches the opposite.
The world often paints sin as freedom and holiness as bondage. Yet in reality, sin is what enslaves, and holiness is what sets a man free. The lie that holiness is boring is not just a misunderstanding. It is a spiritual deception that keeps people from experiencing the joy God intended.
God never designed holiness to diminish joy. He designed it to protect and deepen joy.
The Bible reminds us:
“In thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.”
— Psalm 16:11 (KJV)
Sin may promise pleasure, but it always delivers bondage. It gives excitement for a moment, but leaves regret for a lifetime. Holiness, on the other hand, leads to freedom, peace, and lasting satisfaction. It leads us to a life that is not shallow or empty, but steady and full.
Jesus did not call men to a dull life. He called them to an abundant one.
“I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”
— John 10:10 (KJV)
The problem is not that holiness lacks excitement. The problem is that sin distorts our desires. Sin trains the heart to crave what destroys it. Holiness retrains the heart to desire what brings life.
God’s commands are not meant to keep us from joy. They are meant to lead us into joy.
True holiness aligns the heart with God’s design. It allows us to enjoy His blessings without becoming enslaved by them. It gives us a clean heart and a clear conscience. It strengthens relationships, protects the mind, and produces spiritual confidence.
The joy of obedience is deeper and longer-lasting than the fleeting thrills of sin.
Scripture declares:
“The work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.”
— Isaiah 32:17 (KJV)
This is the kind of peace the world cannot offer. Sin creates chaos. Holiness produces stability. Sin creates anxiety. Holiness produces assurance.
Living a holy life, in dependence on the power of the Holy Spirit, is not a miserable thing. It is a wonderful thing. Holiness is not boring. It is the pathway to real joy, freedom, and life.
